Yamaha AVR-1000

Yamaha R-9

1 9 8 5 1985
1 9 8 8 1988

A big rarity of the unremembered kind - even if it is difficult to appear after the CR-1020, 2020, 3020 or even the CR-2040 !
Contemporary of the A-1000, A-2000a and soon to vanish B-2x, the AVR-1000 was an R-9 outside Japan, sans sideburns and in black and sided by the less powerful and less feature-packed R-8 and R-7 siblings.

Circuit-wise, there is ZDR (Zero Distortion Rule) as inaugurated way back in 1979 in well-remebered beasts such as the B-6 pyramid.

I alas have not much technical meat at hand but the layout below shows the possibilities :
continuous loudness control, three-way tone controls, IR remote, functions & presets galore for the tuner, three pairs of loudspeakers and... a simplified phono stage - sign 'o the times.

The "Turbo Class A" switch is tantalizing but remains mysterious :)

A simulated stereo switch is also present, alongwith two video inputs and switching - preview of the big plunge into early home-theater Yamaha was about to take a year later with the DSP-1 landmark. Sign o' the times, again.

A real AVR here.
