Rare two-tonearm variant of the TD 126 series showing Thorens at its peak, just before digital would alter the market forever.
The TD 226 incorporated all the refinements added between 1976 and 1982 on the TD 126, TD 127, TD 127MkII and TD 127 MkIII, added various enclosure reinforcements, electronic tonearm lifts (two) plus an optional VDS system (à la Micro, Luxman or Audio Technica) called "Disc-Contact" by Thorens.
Tachymeter APC speed tracking (even with the pitch control in use), 78rpm, neon backlighting, lightweight Isotrack tonearms, external (optional) phono stage etc : analogue sound reproduction to the hilt - and up to 730,000¥ in 1983.
Available in Japan in a myriad of versions (like the japanese TD-125...) and with or without accessories such as the MCH-63 arm wand, MCH-I, MCH-II cartridges, TP-99 & TP-929 tonearms (all EMT developments) or the (great) Stabilizer and PPA990 phono stage (both Thorens developments).
The TD 226 was not mainly made for the japanese market but it sold mostly there, in guises such as :
TD 226BC (= blank armboards, 398,000¥)
TD 226 + TP16 + ESOS
TD 226 + TP16 + ESOS + SME 3012R + lift
TD 226 + TP929 + ESOS + SME 3012R + lift
TD 226 + TP997 + ESOS + SME 3009R + lift
Replaced by the TD 520 series.
