Last bestseller for that major brand.
The TD 2001 got awards all over the world and still probably remains the best performance/price ratio for all Thorens turntables. It wasn't anything completely new but more of the ultimate refinement of an almost magic formula.
Ultimate has two meanings here : if 1999 hadn't been THE END for Thorens, the TD 2001 would probably still be available ! Unfortunately, it isn't.
Available later on without tonearm for the ubiquitous SME to take place (TD 2001BC).
I strongly disagree with the black color of this otherwise superb turntable (long-time Thorens user here - I'm allowed to cringe !), if I were to go back to belt-driven decks, I'd probably go for this one... in japanese robe.
More about Thorens here, a Thorens timeline here and another one here ; an exploded view here.
