Regular version of the modern integrated amplifier with the extra-rare TA-AX8 as topper and the later TA-AX6 as cheaper alternative.
But for the cheaper case and grey volume decor delegated to the AX6, the AX7 is visually identical when closed ; when opened, the AX7 has a more complete set of controls : MM pF settings (2), mono/stereo switch (1) and a low filter replacing the subsonic filter of the AX6 (frequency and slope remain however equivalent...).
Inside, the technique is entirely equivalent between the three versions, if a little different by the hardware used - read the TA-AX6 page for the circuit descriptions.
The AX7 and AX8 use the same 21-fin Heat-Pipe and PLPS boxe but slightly different boards'population ; the AX6 is different. This makes direct comparisons a bit difficult but the circuit and resulting sound really come alive with the AX7.
The AX7 also has a beautiful two-piece top enclosure made of solid aluminium which is two-tone anodized/sculptured like that of the Precise P7 TA-P7F.
Despite its 1980 vintage (a visibly problematic period for all manufacturers), the quality of the finish, the choices regarding colors, textures, edges and anodizing is typical Sony - extra-ordinary, especially considering the original list price.
A nice if very discrete touch was added by having the top edge of the front flap being extremely reflective : depending on light orientation and strength, the entire front will look like a single piece of aluminium... or two distinct plates !
Green LEDs atop the selectors indicate play sources and red LEDs under them are for recording indication. This was carried over the extremely successful TA-F555ES series while the "TA-AX" denomination was delegated to low-end amps and combos.
None of these first "AX" sold too well as design was apparently too modern for most (silly) so they are quite rare today - but worth much more than what their "blank" looks may imply.
With the TC-FX7, APM-77W and ST-J75, this makes a very coherent music-oriented system. I have an AX7, I love it and will never let it go - unless I find a AX8 :)
