Sony SS-3300

1 9 6 6 1966
1 9 7 0 1970

Sony's very first high-end loudspeaker, from the very first ES series launched in 1965.

An extra-rare rarity which, sadly, all catalogs I could get (I have them all now) only show the front. Or the sides. Or the front again.

Decriptions are however a bit more detailed : high-efficiency at 98dB/W/m (!) coming from a large magnet 30cm compliant-edge with treated cone woofer, 12cm closed-back medium and horn loaded 5cm cone high driver.

Naturally, a tradition at Sony since this very SS-3300, the high-efficiency LC filter allows three-way multi-amping (with the use of the TA-4300 external filter) or simpler integrated hookup.
All three drivers are spec'ed at 16 Ohm - easy to drive even with the most measly tube amp ! Sony was already selling only "powerful" solid-state amps so there is a little contradiction there...

The near-Invisibilia TAH-10 stereo headphone adaptor could also be used when hooked to a TA-1120 speaker terminals to navigate between loudspeakers or headphones listening.

As in the SS-A5 masterpiece, the enclosure and everyhting else is made of real wood : 2,5cm lumbercore plywood crossbraced with 2,5 x 2,5cm strips and triangular glue blocks.

The exterior finish is oiled eurasian teak highlighted by an aluminium trim which protrudes more at the top thanks to the very 60s slanted front part of the sides - little things that make good.
That trim was kept on the SS-8150 btw :)

The SS-3300 is a big bulky infinite baffle (acoustic suspension) 41kg chunk of wood still dressed in 1960s bourgeois furniture style - far from the 1970s SS-8150 or the obviously technical SS-G7 bestseller.

Rapidly joined by the smaller SS-3100 and SS-2800 in 1967, then replaced by the latter two before all got superceded by Sony's high-end ULM series such as the SS-7600 in 1972.

Luckily for us, there is at least one SS-3300 owner and he has posted images here !
