Part of the Series 3000 and less successful than the TA-F3000 or CDP-X3000, the MDS-J3000 was nevertheless part of the upper end of Sony's MiniDisc lineup with its 10mm aluminium front, pressed metal sides and R-Core transformer.
The 20Bit Wide BitStream is the star of the show, alongwith vanishingly low distortion.
Basically the same d/a and a/d scheme as the contemporary MDS-JA50ES, bar the analogue-to-digital link to the ATRAC 4 which is performed with 24bit resolution on the latter and "only" 20bit on the J3000.
Build-quality is also somewhat different :)
Also included is a convenient SRC (Sample Rate Converter) and Current Pulse d/a chips - plus the (optional) RM-D10P keyborad editor.
Being a MiniDisc, editing oprions are galore so as to be able to <DIVIDE>, <ERASE>, <MOVE>, <COMBINE>, <UNDO>, <A-B ERASE> and <MUSIC SYNCHRO> and <TIME MACHINE RECORDING> and <SMART SPACE> - a real computer of sorts !
