No, you don't need a CDP-X7ESD, CDP-X77ES, CDP-X777ES to benefit from the second all-time best CD drive ever made : a little 337ESD will do !

The 337ESD is the lower-end and companion of the (bestselling) CDP-557ESD.
It belongs to the end of the 1979 Sony-Philips deal whereas Sony would take the CD marketing lead in exchange of (among other things) the frequent use of Philips ICs such as Philips' 16bit converters.

Filtering is however done by a Sony CXD1144 but actual d/a by two TDA1541A (or non-A depending on production batches) ; there apparently are several versions of the main d+a board...

As in all of Sony's late 1980s / early 1990s players, the parts used are always excellent : two bigga 6800µF ELNA for Audio, copper bus bars, proper decoupling of the converters, excellent PCB layout/markings/heatsinking and all-metal everything.
However, lower-end oblige, there is no chassis copper-plating here, nor mammoth transformer(s) or balanced outputs.

Mostly, inside is the mighty KSS-190A laser and diecast BU aluminium base - guaranteed twenty years of use, if not more.
That's the reason why 337ESDs recently became pricier as they generally become fodder to repair the bigger ones with a (hopefully) newer KSS-190A...

Nudies and praise here.
