Rotel RB-5000

Rotel the POWER amp

The RB-5000 is able to output 500W per channel between 20Hz and 20Khz with infinitesimal distortion - but the meters go up to 1kW !

A lavish and oversized enterprise, Rotel spared no expense to make it THE power amp - in upper case.
In fact, this powerhouse is named THE POWER AMP - it says so on the faceplate, as in "there is nor ever will be another one worth this exclusive language tag".

Two monster toroidal power transformers plus a regular one for relays and LEDs, XLR terminals, three loudspeaker outputs per channel, gold-plated inputs, DC and OCL organized, big VU meters accompanied by 16-LED peak dots, four 22,000µF caps, four 150W power devices per channel in Darlington dc 4-stage linear complete-mirrored parallel push-pull and... 53kg in toto with a peak power consumption of 3,2kW !

The first stage is a DC pure complementary p-p differential amp with low-noise dual transistors.

The pre-driver stage is a cascode p-p differential amp for reduced thermal varaitions of the voltage center point ; also low-noise transistors.

The output stage is a Darlington dc 4-stage linear complete-mirrored parallel push-pull with four pairs of Toshiba 2SD0555 and 2SB600 ; due to its balanced structure, only low amounts of NFB are used.

Bias is of the sliding kind, with the first few Watts remaining in Class A, switched after that to Class B.

The first units officially rolled out of the factory in february 1978, a few months before the RC-5000 but these were and still are very rare : a few were sold in France, quite a few in Italy, very few elsewhere and almost none in Japan as this was mostly export-only.

Only two ads were published in Japan in july 1978 and september 1979 for the original black versions, but Rotel kept them available until 1980/81.
Color was only very light champagne at first then black for the end of the production run - the opposite of those in Japan.

Rank-Arena, Rotel distributor in the UK, announced the RC and RB-5000 as novelties for 1979 ; Rank-Arena subsequently became Rotel Europe.

There was only one production run for the RB-5000 : the first serial for the RB is #833NB49071, where "833" is the product code for the 5000 combo.

Optionally, certain markets could deliver an optional big box named RZ-8, aka the PLAY MIXER.
