Last gasps of successful european reel-to-reel recorders.
Magnificently wide and futuristic in design, forward in the use of molded plastic, these Philips recorders, however, look better when well photographed... or new.
Because, unfortunately, plastic doesn't age very well : large molded plates of fairly thin plastic easily get marked, can't be washed properly and also often tend to disform with the years (and heat, and direct sunlight...).
The same applies to the Wega Concept K51 for instance - can't have it all.
However, a properly aged 25-years old N4422 still looks stunning - and big, very big. Had Philips made a two-track 26cm reel version of the N4506, it is evident more people would remember those today.
The 4506 is almost the same as the 4422 but doesn't have built-in power amplifier and loudspeakers.
