Upgraded version of the 1989 PM-80 bestseller :
MOS-Fet output transistors, HDAM modules for each of the three blocks (phono, pre, power) plus HDAM active volume circuit for the copper-isolated 4-gang attenuator.
The caps were reduced to 2x 15,000µF (instead of 2x 18,000µF) but custom-ordered to ELNA, the trafo was upped in quality (and tagged Marantz) and a second CCNE noise-killer was added in the power-supply.
The 80a was stripped from the PM-80 's processor loop and third tape i/o but the rest is pretty much the same, diecast sideburns included, and served as basic version(s) for the PM-88SE, PM-88aSE, PM-90, PM-99SE or even the export Sm-80, PM-80SE and PM-82.
The less common black version is denominated PM-80a BL and the rare export version of the 80a PM-80II.
A real PM-80a here.
