Luxman M-120A

Luxman M-120A Mark II

1 9 8 0 1980
1 9 8 2 1982

Smaller sibling of the M-300.
Much smaller - in fact it can be seen as preview of the later M-02 (same specs), with the M-05 continuing where the M-300 left off.

Realtime DC Processed Duo-ßeta circuit with monolithic Dual-Fet in the first stage, cascode bootstrap circuits in the first and pre-driver stages, three-step Darlington circuit with quadruple push-pull of high fT bipolars for the output stage.

Added to previous designs were Duo-Alpha (for 300W BTL operation) with its own (bigger) speaker terminals, two Heat-Pipes for (very) efficient cooling, shorter distance between pre-driver and output stages and lightweight construction and, visibly, blinkingly, ten red LEDs output indicators for each channel.

Protection works with either overcurrent-sensing (output stages) or DC-sensing (output terminals).

Cosmetically, there are three versions : one with shiny anodization and wood enclosure à la L-58A with a black strip restricted to the LEDs area, another (far more common) identical but with the black strip extended to the entire width of the front plate and, finally, one with matte anodization sans enclosure (and wide black strip).

I believe the former to be the original run, the second to be the main production run, mainly destined to the USA market and the latter to be the later run, destined to Europe only.

Shiny+wood gives a rather welcome warmer appearance to the M-120A but the matte version has a very nice deep top opening above the Heat-Pipes à la L-11 or LX-38, a thing alas never shown in the catalogs.

The C-120A and M-120A sold very well but were export-only : unknown in Japan.

The M-120A Mark II version eludes me : it is entirely identical to the original and has the exact same specifications. It seems to have been only available in Europe, shortly before the M-02 replaced the M-120A (Mark II).
