Professional gear, sold and marketed as such.
Oh, well, not really : this was consumer stuff, but with a little help of the Nippon Columbia studios... Before churning out bombastic AV receivers, Denon mostly was a pro brand - this was healthy gear, made to function day-in, day-out with no problems whatsoever, ever.
The little modules are the power packs of the 700Z - interchangeable on the fly and in less than 40 seconds in case an original module goes bust - very professional.
There was a PMA-700 (non "Z", 1974) in Japan as well but I have no idea about the differences between the two versions ; the "Z" version was followed, very briefly, by a PMA-700Z mkIII... which seems to correspond to "our" PMA-700Z.
There also seems to a semi-equivalent by the Monarch brand : Series 8 Model 8000. Same layout, same specs, same knobs, same... factory ?
