Akai GX-4000D
Akai GX-4000DB
After the 4000DS, 4000DS MKII, 4000D PRO and 4000DB throughout the 1970s, the visually redesigned GX-4000D was the last version, released with added GX heads for ultra-reliablity there too.
Shiny silver originally (very common) but also available in black (very rare).
The GX-4000DB visually substitutes the S.O.S feature for a Dolby circuit. There is a trick around this, though : pull the left line-in knob and the S.O.S. circuit is there !
The DB version was not produced in black.
Not much else to say : it sold like hotcakes despite being launched when open-reel had past its market peak and it lived even beyond the launch of CD !
Nudies aplenty here and versions comparison here.
