Akai AS-1080

1 9 7 5 1975

Big 20kg receiver with Dolby compatibility.

Not a "monster receiver", though : only 2x 80W or 4x 40W into 8 Ohm.... but between 20Hz and 20Khz.
Enough to become fully deaf in a jiffy.

10Hz...60Khz power bandwidth, -50dB crosstalk (1Khz), 90dB s/n ratio (80dB for the phono MM section), 1,9µV FM sensitivity (IHF).

I don't know what is under the hood and have no idea who built this rare 52cm biggie for Akai.

There is something obviously of Yamaha in the looks but as far as I know, Yamaha never OEM'ed anything from anyone except its Orthodynamic headphones which seemingly came from Peerless.

An informative forum thread says it could be Pioneer ! Or, perhaps, at least, the same factory where Pioneer had some of its mid 70s receivers made...

Even if the AS-1080DB was years before the 1979 friendly exchange of executives between Mitsubishi and Akai by way of Akai's bank which took on the role of counsellor for the occasion, there might be something there.

Akai's bank was, btw, the... Mitsubishi bank.
