Horizontal semi-big recorder which has the unusual offering of two noise-reduction systems : Dolby (Dolby) and DNL (Philips).

DNL stands for Dynamic Noise Limiter so it works with a gate and the two systems were meant to be used together.

Also an SST mechanism (Solid and Stabilized Transport) which has a very large 10,4cm / 448g flywheel amounting to 5090g/cm torque and Hall-element driven auto-stop.
Precision-engineered reel axis, 0,05µ capstan finish, 4-point head support, solidary capstan / pinch roller mounting and stabilized power-supply.

The rest is more common : separate bias/eq switches, mic/line mixing, tape run LED, 2-level peak LEDs, auto-zero memory, quick-cue key and oil-damped cassette holder.

The AD-1800 was named AD-5700 in Japan.
