JVC
GB-1E
(1970s)
Here
is something which never sold well : suspended loudspeakers.
Grundig
had its own Audiorama 8000, JVC
had the GB-1 and the GB-2 and others had their own. Elipson
was the first anyway to have taken advantage of the round shape
- no diffraction, easy omni-directional spread of the sound and
very little resonance.
Even if not high-fidelity, Toa
sold millions of "sound balls" throughout the world -
many are still hanging around when you walk in this railway station
or that public building.
Each
11kg
GB-1E has four 5" free-edge
woofers and two "globular diaphragm" 2" tweeters.
The two halves are hermetically sealed and, inside, a special acoustic
material prevents standing waves from... standing ; a 5901 floor
stand was available if hanging wasn't possible.
Easy to feed with 93dB of efficiency, a 5kHz crossover and 8Ohm
load ; maximum power handling is at 80W, or 40W RMS.
