Technics SL-1650
(1977 - 1978)
Here is something that vanished completely: record changers.
Up
to six records can be loaded on the umbrella-like spindle. The Memo-Gram
selector allows to program any sequence between records: with three
discs loaded, if set to "4",
the last side of the tird disc will be repeated once ; with six
discs loaded and the Memo-Gram set to "4", only the first
4 sides will be played. And if set to "R",
the last side of the last record will be played repeatedly. Ad nauseam
:)
In single-disc mode, the Memo-Gram settings alternate between repeat
of a side up to six times. Or repeatedly, continuously and passionately.
Of
course, auto-reverse wasn't in the program, but the SL-1650
was built like any big turntable: the rotor and platter are combined
into a single piece, a B-FG speed monitor
which stands a 30g load without loss
of selected speed, zinc-alloy tonearm base and aluminium die-cast
turntable base.
Further features are a double-insulator system, a 10%
pitch control for each speed, a strobeobscope lamp and a (very basic)
variant of Technics' fine EPA-100
tonearm. Said tonearm, however, isn't supported by a motor of its
own, but is fed by that of the turntable.
