Sony PS-X75
september 1979
- 1982

The PS-X75 is an update and improvement of two models : PS-X70 and... PS-B80 - more modern looking than the original (but I suspect the base and motor to be equivalent) and far more reliable than the original 1978 Biotracer.

The one close sibling was the slightly later PS-X700 - probably fully equivalent mechanically but for the added tracking force indicator... All three models of the series weigh the same 13kg and have the exact same dimensions ; only the tonearm and features change : PS-X75, PS-X65, PS-X70.
Specs are identical, too : another example of Sony's habit to reach the same goal by way of different means. An open-minded and rich attitude often tagged -stupidly- as incoherent. But Sony sold many many many of each model worldwide - since Sony didn't force customers to buy its LP turntables rather than Pioneer's or Yamaha's, these must have had "something" that put them just a cut above the rest ;-)

Although the Biotracer tonearms can become difficult to service (due to the many velocity sensors), it seems the PS-X75 (like the PS-X800) didn't suffer from whatever it is that made the PS-X555ES and mostly the original PS-B80 so fragile.

Add in a Denon DL-160 or a Sony XL-55 moving-coil cartridge - surprise : high-end sound of the affordable kind !
