TA-N86
TA-N86B
(march 1978 - 1984)
The
little one.
Not as potentially problematic as the TA-N88B
and switchable in Class A, B or as a monoblock. High
fT transistors and a PLPS power
supply chopping at 20kHz. A truly excellent amp in Class
A, losing a little of its distinction when used in the other
two modes.
According
to the Service Manual's specs, the US and Canada models deliver
more power than the AEP (EU) and UK versions - don't ask me why.
Available in silver, too, but only in Japan (TA-N86, shown above).
Available in Germany until much later than anywhere else, naturally.
I
am the lucky owner of two USA units, one having problems with its
PLPS section but the other is working like a charm with no servicing
whatsoever since 1978 ! Almost as hot in Class
A as a Yamaha
CA-1010, it stays cool, however, when driven in Class B or as
a monoblock. But the diecast heatsinks do come handy in Class A
!
Very
successful amplifier in Germany and also in Japan ; the production
run should be around 6000 units so the N86B isn't really rare -
people tend to hang on to them, though :) Companion of the equally
sure-fire-bargain TA-E86B
preamplifier.
