Sony
TA-E86B
Sony TA-E86
(march 1978 - 1981+)
Simplified
and slightly later sibling to the TA-E88
with less stringent componentry and features. But the single transformer
has a 2nd winding solely for theMC cartridge Head
Amp and the philisophy is the same: no ICs !
Unlike
the 88 units, the 86
combo was only delivered worldwide in grey (below) and Japan only
saw the original silver finish (above). Quite rare in the US but
fairly abundant Europe, like the TA-N86
mating amp. By all accounts, this is a truly excellent
audio preamplifier.
Rather
strangely, unlike the 88 combo, the E86 and N86 components weren't
advertised at all in Japan. This would tend to prove that advertising
doesn't do much sales-wise because the E86 and N86 sold like parisian
french croissants on a sunday morning. When shown in Sony's own
catalogs from may 1979 onward, the
88 and 86 units were tagged with the original ES
logo.
