Pioneer P-D1
(september 1982 - 1984)

Pioneer's first cd player was seemingly home-made as the mechanism resembles neither a Kyocera nor an Hitachi. But the P-D1 surely didn't comply to Pioneer's earlier attempt to include 4-channel surround sound !

At 198,000¥ in 1983 , the P-D1 was near the top but seemingly didn't sell much and it is an x-rare rarity nowadays.

My own P-D1 Digital Compact Disc Player unfortunately wanders more than it actually plays music so I cannot comment on its sound qualities... But it is part of the units I will never let go.
