Akai
CD-D1
(1983 - 1984)
...
aka Tensai TAD-2000,
Micro Seiki CD-M1,
Kyocera DA-01,
Rotel RCD780 and Phase Linear 9500.
The mechanism and triple display system (track / time / head location)
is reminiscent of the Hitachi OEMs, but the somewhat astonished
rabbit above was only for Akai :)
According to Gerbrand, who kindly sent internal views of his CD-D1,
the original player was made by Kyocera and the Akai, Micro, Phase
Linear and Tensai were the rebadges. A turn which may make sense
if one watches closely the functions layout between the CD-D1
and siblings and Kyocera's DA-910
2nd gen' player.
Although
I have some difficulty imagining such a brand new brand developing
on its own such a new device AND serving as OEM supplier, it seems
that it was the case.
Confirmation of this on the PhaseTek
website and its FAQ
section.
