Marantz
CD-73
(1983
- 1984)
Probably the 3rd most remembered Digital Audio Disc player in Europe.
Tacky looks as per the other contemporary Marantz, errr, Philips
units. This was Marantz version of the Philips
CD 303, ready as a final design before the Philips unit was
and originally named CD-83, a pre-production
sample of which you can see in the Invisibilia
section of this website.
Marantz
didn't fancy the 35cm format CD-63
and therefore didn't push its sales much - the opposite of Philips
who was pushing the CD 100 sales ;-)
Center of the CD 100,
CD-63 or CD-73 was the Philips CDM-1 mechanism and the Philips TDA-1540
digital to analogue chip, a common combination in those days.
Helped
by the Marantz "aura", the CD-73
sold very well, except in Japan. Many are still around and most
are still playing Digital
Audio
Discs
just like way back in 1983 because the Philips
CDM-1 really is of the undying kind. Early production units
had the original CDM-0.
